Ford Transit Connect X-Press
El sueño de los repartidores
Os resumo: Es un prototipo comercial. Monta el motor del Focus RS, suspensiones modificadas, discos de freno de 320mm, asientos tipo baquet de marca Sparco, etc. Mas informacion en ingles: The once-off vehicle promises to deliver a top speed of 130mph and 0-60mph in under 7 seconds. The 1,988cc turbocharged 16-valve Duratec RS powerplant was an obvious choice as Connect has a certain amount of under-the-skin commonality with Focus at the front end. It was still not an easy job to fit the engine and associated plumbing into the allotted space. Fortunately, the engineering team responsible for the X-press had all worked on the original Connect development project so if these guys didn't know how to make this work, no one did. Featuring four cylinders in-line and mounted transversely it has a cast aluminium alloy cylinder head and a cast iron block housing forged pistons and connecting rods. The double overhead camshafts are belt driven. Forced induction is courtesy of a stainless steel water-cooled Garrett turbocharger with a maximum boost pressure of one bar and air is fed to the turbo via a water-cooled intercooler. Exhaust gases are handled by a tuned stainless steel wide bore, low back pressure sports exhaust supplied by Bosal. A closed-loop, three-way catalytic converter is fitted. Keeping the engine cool is of paramount importance, of course, and with this in mind it has a high capacity water pump, high efficiency oil cooler, uprated cooling fans and heat shielding around the turbo. The end result of all this is a very unstressed 212 bhp at 5,500rpm and 229 lb/ft of torque which peaks at 3,500rpm. The front wheels are driven via a five-speed manual gearbox with a sports short-throw shifter mechanism, a heavy-duty AP racing clutch and a Quaife automatic torque-biasing differential. X-press has a redesigned and lowered Macpherson strut front suspension with uprated offset coil springs and Sachs racing dampers. The lower A-arms are revised with increased roll-centre height and a 23mm anti-roll bar. The rear set-up has a Hotchkiss beam axle with uprated leaf springs, Sachs twin-tube dampers, a 22mm anti-roll bar and a lowered ride height. It's all very well endowing a Connect with a serious power hike, but it has to be able to stop as well and the standard front brakes have been replaced with Brembo four-pot, twin opposed piston callipers and 325mm ventilated discs. Two-pot callipers and 280mm solid discs take care of the rear. A MK25 Bosch anti-lock braking system is fitted. The standard Connect wheels and tyres could not incorporate the brakes, let alone cope with the performance, so X-press sits atop 18x8in OZ alloys shod with 225/40R18 Michelin Pilot unidirectional low profile tyres.
