Fat Lip - 1989 Nissan 240SX SE

“Holy Shit” is usually the first thing people say when they see Dan Taylor’s fender flared 1989 240sx SE coupe. Not mainly because of the flared body, or the S15 SR20DET residing in the engine bay. Wait… an SR from a S15? The 240hp, ball bearing T28, with variable cam timing and 6 speed? That SR? Yep, but we’ll get to that in just a second.

The first thing you notice when first laying eyes on Taylor’s 240 are the wheels, those big frikin’ SSR wheels. Not only are they big they’re also ridiculously wide. As wide as your mom’s ass? Maybe not that wide, but pretty damn wide. Try 18x13 rear running 295/35/18 and 18x10.5 front with 245/40/18 tires, now that’s a lot of rubber, and when that rubber warms up it grabs. With more than 3 inches of lip up front and more than four and a half inches of lip in the rear some have resorted calling the wheels excessive, others say it’s pointless, sure opinions are like assholes but who gives a damn what they say when it looks this good.

Taylor’s S13 odyssey began back in 1998 when the now defunct V-Spec Performance made Dan a deal and sold the car to him with a redtop swapped in. With years of raised boost on the stock motor, it created problems that had Taylor swap out the original redtop for another fresh one, all in all the motors had been in and out a total of nine times with all of the work done mostly himself. In 2002 Taylor happened to see an S15 SR powered S13 built by Yashio Factory (think Pink S15) in an Option Video and wondered what it would take to do the same thing, as luck would have it YLM in Irwindale, CA had a S15 front clip fresh off the boat. Since the second Redtop SR was on it’s last leg, Taylor decided to take on the project and picked everything up including the S15 rear member.

“How do you do this? “ Since a very few number of enthusiasts had done an S15 swap into a S13 stateside and even fewer that had them running, trial and error was the name of the game. The motor had gone in fine and everything pretty much bolted up but the wiring was a different story. Ken Flores of Motorex in Los Angeles, CA took on the task of wiring the beast. Since none of the plugs or harnesses would work together and there was very limited info, a lot of guesswork was involved; Finally after a substantial amount of time Flores put his talents to use and got the car up and running. There was one drawback however; since the S15’s SR was equipped with variable cam timing it required the S15’s gauge cluster in order for it to work and have the motor at it’s full potential. After a bit of searching a Silvia Spec R cluster was found and made it’s way into the S13. An HKS 3 row intercooler, and a Koyo radiator take care of the car’s cooling. On the exhaust side a Blitz down pipe was mated to the 3.5in. A’pexi N1 GT spec exhaust system.

“ A LOT of trial and error” explained Taylor about swapping out the S13 rear member in favor of the S15 unit. Although the rear member does go on, things had to be modified and or other parts had to be installed in order for the rear end to work. R32 Skyline lower control arms were sourced and installed and the factory Viscous LSD was replaced in favor of the S15’s Helical LSD. Also added were S15 front and rear sway bars, which are significantly larger than their U.S. counterparts. A set of JIC coil overs with camber plates were installed along with Z32 (300ZX) front and rear brakes and the S15’s 5lug hubs were also installed.

Now honestly folks, what 240 coupe would be complete without the Japanese Silvia front end? With that in mind Taylor picked one up and installed it along with an Aero Duo FRP hood and a Bomex lip was added on for good measure. Ah yes, we now come to the fender flares. Without these bad boys the enormous wheels would stick so far out the car would look like something off the pages of Low Rider Magazine. To combat that BRS Auto Design cut the fenders and added their custom flares giving the 240 a very aggressive stance.

Inside dual Recaro SRD’s take the place of the stock buckets. A Nardi Torino steering wheel, a FET quick release hub and a boost gauge round out the interior mods. Hell there’s even a Woodstock doll (from the Peanuts comics) humping the quarter window.

Dan Taylor has put a lot of effort into his 240 and a lot of it shows. So what’s in store for the future? According to Taylor it will always be a daily driver and a weekend track warrior. Also more power is up next on the build up, and there were also hints that the already outrageous 240 may possibly get a whole new look.

We can’t wait Dan, we can’t wait.
