The utility function of a typical employee of a certain company owned by the State Treasury can be approximated by the formula U(C,R) = C1/3R2/3. This employee can devote 460 hours a month to work and leisure. The wage in this company amounts to 10 zloty per hour. There are no social payments. a) Calculate, how many hours a typical employee of this company will work and how many hours he/she will devote to leisure. b) Due to the recently incurred losses the company is going to be closed down. In order to prevent social protests a typical employee will receive an unemployment benefit at a level ensuring that he/she will be indifferent between becoming unemployed and working. Determine the minimum benefit level for which the typical employee will agree to become unemployed. Problem #2 (10 points) A certain firm is offering two specific positions. Two appropriate candidates responded to the offer. Each of them values his free time differently but only high salaries will motivate these persons to undertake work. a) Mr. A does not work and his income amounts to 1500 zloty a month (social benefit and interest on capital). He does not like to work and his utility function can be approximated by the formula U = C1/3R2/3. b) Mr. B makes a living from interest. This way he monthly earns 2500 zloty. According to him, consumption and leisure should be “consumed” in a constant proportion, i.e. his utility function can be approximated by the formula U = min{C,R}. For what wage level (per hour) will both persons agree to accept the job offer of this firm? Assume that they both have 420 hours a month to devote to work and leisure.
