![]() While the SR is ultimately more powerful, the VG has a LOT more power in the RPM ranges a street engine lives 90% of its life at - 2000-4000rpm. This is where street car use vs track car use becomes a pretty significant factor. If you"re mainly racing, the SR would be the way to go as above 4600rpm they are nearly identical and the SR is a much lighter engine. For a street car the choice (if physical engine SIZE isn"t a limiting factor) it"s tougher. The SR will probably in the MPG battle, so in some cases it"s a "have your cake and eat it" engine. But if cut and thrust is your game, or if our car is over 2500lbs or so, the VG just might be the better bet. ![]() |

Silvia S13
The Silvia 13 appeared in 1988 to immediate acclaim. Styling was the main reason, as a handsome coupe body was something new at the time. The drive quality was the next factor, with its rear wheel drive providing a light and sporty drive. The engine was initially a 1.8-liter CA18, but this was replaced mid-model by a 2.0-liter inline 4-cylinder DOHC SR20. The top-of-the-range K"s was equipped with a turbocharged SR20 that produced 172 hp and 166 lb ft, while the Q"s / J"s featured an NA SR20DE delivering 133 hp / 118 lb ft. Its relatively light weight of 2,470 lb (K"s) and the 172 hp engine combined to give a pleasurable sensation of acceleration, and sporty drive. Also its light steering and nimble handling meant that anyone could easily enjoy driving it. It is probably the ideal car for beginners. 240SX Fastback 180 SX The 180 SX made its debut as the hachback version of the S13 Silvia, and was strengthened by a string of modifications until 1995 when it underwent wholesale alterations. Its basic mechanical features remained unchanged, but its styling was refashioned along more sporty lines. The front was given a new spoiler, the side-step reinforced, the rear lamps rounded, and a rear spoiler added. The top-of-the-range Type-X and the next-level-down Type R featured the turbocharged SR20DET developing 202 hp and 203 lb ft. The basic-grade Type-S runs off an NA SR20DE engine producing 138 hp and 132 lb ft. The tail control generated by the axle work is pleasure unique to rear-wheel-drive cars. It is not a car that can depend on pure brute force, so half of the fun is using one"s driving skills to get the most out of it. Silvia S14 The S14 was launched in 1993 and in 1996 was given a make over which swept aside the staid styling for a more aggressive feel. It uses the 2.0-liter inline 4-cylinder DOHC NA SR20DE engine, and its turbo version, the SR20DET. The NA version is fitted to the J"s and Q"s and delivers 157 hp and 138 ft lb, while the turbo gives 216 hp and 203 lb ft to the top-of-the-range K"s. For drive quality the K"s is the pick of the bunch, and while the NA Q"s is well-balanced, it seems a bit short on power for a car of its class. In terms of performance both models compare well with their rivals, but the potential of the suspension and chassis is not quite up to scratch and their sportiness is patchy. Nonetheless they still receive a lot of support. Silvia Spec-R S15 Silvia Spec R The S15 Silvia"s chassis performance is vastly improved over previous models. The best-selling version is the turbocharged Spec R, showing just how strong driver preference for sports model is. The Spec R"s SR20DET engine generates a maximum power of 247 hp -- almost 30 hp higher than the S14. But, more importantly, the Spec R does this without sacrificing mid-range torque characteristics. For a turbo-engined car, the SR20DET provides excellent throttle control response at partial throttle, letting the driver take the Spec R"s front engine/rear drive performance to its limits. Cornering control is also superb. While a high-rpm unit may show faster acceleration and top speed, a car like the Spec R is actually faster in the most-commonly used speed range. At 2,750 lbs, curb weight is light for a modern car of this size. The 6-speed manual transmission"s gear shifting is just right: fast and easy, with the perfect balance between sportiness and daily driveability. Since the S14, weight distribution has been changed, while handling has been improved considerably by such upgrades as a Torsen limited-slip differential. The Super HICAS steering system -- available only with the manual-transmission Spec R -- is another step in the car"s natural evolution from the S14, ensuring both high-speed stability and satisfying maneuverability. Only the tires are unchanged from the S14. Different tires -- an easy modification -- should improve performance significantly. Nevertheless, the S15 Silvia"s chassis is appropriate for a front engine/rear drive production sports car, and is well-matched to the engine. This model change can be considered a huge success, for it abandoned the line"s vague, specialty car status in favor of an all-out sports model approach.
